His professional training has continued in the form of frequent and specialized continuing legal education courses in life and estate planning and administration, probate administration, trusts, elder law, gay marriage law, and real estate subjects.

Attorney Burris is a general practice lawyer with a focus on the areas of estate planning and administration, probate law, elder law, business counseling, real estate law and gay marriage and divorce.

During more than 30 years of practice, he has handled a wide variety of cases from probate administrations and trust settlements to neighbor disputes, gay marriage and divorce to real estate transactions.

Prior to opening Burris Law Offices in 1985, Mr. Burris was a law clerk for several state district court judges in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He practiced law with a small law firm in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He also worked for a real estate development company in Garland, Texas (near Dallas).

Following his passion for the environment and education, Mr. Burris was employed as chief steward for a large tract of privately-owned woodland and wetland located near Brainerd, Minnesota; and managed Crow Wing Natural History Area, an early Environmental Learning Center located in Crow Wing County, Minnesota.

Mr. Burris has held numerous leadership positions, both elected and appointed, in a wide variety of organizations. He was appointed by Governor Rudy Perpich to the Minnesota Environmental Education Advisory Board, serving for five years. He was reappointed by Governor Arne Carlson, and served as chairman of that Board. He was subsequently elected as President of the Minnesota Environmental Education Association, which is made up of people who teach others about the natural environment, and he is presently "Of Counsel" to that organization.

Mr. Burris was elected by members and is past-president of the Minnesota Association for Environmental Education. He has served on the board of directors of the Izaak Walton League, Minnesota Division and is a former board member of Touchstone Mental Health, a Minnesota-based non-profit corporation providing services to people suffering from persistent debilitating mental illness.
